"Going within to contact the Great Tao and to solve the mystery of being is a theme we find in many of the world's religions. The Masters of Huainan, a Taoist collection of sayings on civilization, culture and government composed over two thousand years ago, teaches: "The Tao cannot be bought from others; it is attained in oneself. If you abandon yourself to seek from others, you are far from the Tao."

On the importance of true self-knowledge, the Masters of Huainan says: "Clarity does not mean seeing others, just seeing oneself. Acuity does not mean hearing others, just hearing oneself. Understanding does not mean knowing others, just knowing oneself."
